Innovation and environment, the balance in the Cir.Co project comes, the circular economy of coffee, with the improvement of waste processing.

𝗖𝗶𝗿. In fact, from this by-product it is possible to obtain cellulose, lignin, lipids and some phenolic compounds that make it interesting for applications in various fields, from cosmetics to nutraceuticals, up to the production of paper with reduced environmental impact.

The main goals of the project include the creation of virtuous paths for industrial symbiosis, a network of skills, new bio-products, and the provision of training for new professional figures. The initiative was funded by the Cariplo Foundation and Innovhub SSI. Coffee is the second most traded product in the world, with a global consumption of 9.8 million tonnes (2015). “Silverskinnet” is a dry waste that can be easily collected, as it is generated all over the world by individual industrial plants. In general, it is not reused, but is disposed of as solid municipal waste or to the extent used for energy production. An important assumption in the project was the “completely waste-free” approach, for which the aim was to make full use of the “silver skin” in all its parts, with applications that go beyond those in the food sector, and therefore set multidisciplinary initiatives, aimed at creating interactions and interconnections between very different sectors, such as cosmetics and paper, in line with the EU’s and civil society’s desire for the development and promotion of a circular economy, based on recycling.
