Milk plus coffee is equal to cappuccino. This drink is now one of the main characters in the typical Italian breakfast, but many do not know its origin. The main story is attributed to the ingenuity of Marco da Aviano, a monk who adheres to the Capuchin Order, a close friend of the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I of Habsburg. Sent by the pope to Vienna in 1683, when he arrived in the city, he was served coffee.

However, the religious found that the drink was too bitter and asked to sweeten it with the addition of other ingredients. They gave him milk, which made the coffee lighter and gave it a color similar to the brown on the Capuchin cash sock, hence the name it is now known for around the world. There are no scientifically proven beneficial properties associated with cappuccino.

It is a filling drink but not very full of nutrients; the main vitamin contained in it is vitamin A, the content of which, however, comes from the milk used for preparation. This vitamin has a fairly important antioxidant effect on vision and skin, but cappuccino is certainly not its primary source of food origin. The same can be said about the calcium added to the milk with which cappuccino is prepared: it is a nutrient that is friendly to bones and teeth, but cappuccino must not be one of its main sources. Then the coffee we find in cappuccino can overlap with ephedrine, with certain antibiotics, with clozapine and with many other active ingredients.

Consumption of milk, on the other hand, can interfere with the intake of antibiotics; for this reason milk should not be taken with ciprofloxacin or tetracyclines. Finally, with regard to the possible side effects, it should be remembered that intake of excessive doses of coffee can be discouraged in case of anxiety, bleeding disorders, certain cardiovascular problems, such as high blood pressure, then diabetes, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, glaucoma and osteoporosis.

Consumption of cow’s milk is not recommended in case of lactose intolerance or milk allergy. As much as cappuccino helps us start the day with being a part of our breakfast, we must remember not to overdo it so as not to risk annoying side effects.
