Today, Thursday, September 22, in the hall of the new oratory of the parish of Cossila San Grato, Biella, as part of the Wellness Coffee organized by the ANZITUTTO Association in collaboration with the parishes of Valle Oropa, Bar Cossila San Grato, Associazione Soggiorno Anziani Favaro, Auser Biella, with the support of 3Bi – Biomedical Library of Biella, we talked about cervical arthrosis, with the speaker dr. Giovanni Poggi, physiatrist.
The reports were preceded by a short presentation by the geriatrician Debernardi, president of First.
Dr. Poggi began by explaining the anatomy of the cervical spine, which includes not only the vertebrae but also the muscles and ligaments. Inside the vertebrae is the spinal cord from which the nerve roots emerge. Between the vertebrae are the intervertebral discs. About 75% of people suffer from cervical pain, especially between the ages of 40 and 60. It is a major cause of drug expenditure. In cervical arthrosis, bony changes are created, the disc dries out, bony protrusions are created that compress the nerves. Causes of cervical arthrosis: aging, incorrect positions in front of computers, excessive and repeated efforts, trauma, whiplash, rheumatoid arthritis, abnormalities of the spine. Anxiety and depression can also make the condition worse. Symptoms: neck and neck pain, stiffness, reduced mobility, joint noise, headache, nausea, dizziness when changing position. Sometimes the pain radiates from the arm to the fingers (cervicobrachialgia). The first examination to be done is the X-ray, which may be sufficient for the diagnosis and is necessary before any manipulations. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance only later. An electromyography will be useful to evaluate the nerve pain. Then a discussion of the drugs used, from anti-inflammatory agents to muscle relaxants, to cortisone, with an explanation of their mechanism of action and side effects. Paracetamol as a pain reliever can also be used. Beware of opiates, especially in the elderly. Instrumental therapies are unfortunately mainly symptomatic. Massage and osteopathic treatments are helpful. Acupuncture can also be helpful, but it is also only symptomatic. Help can also come from spa treatments. Neurotapings (especially patches) can help. Cervical collars are indicated only in the acute phases. Postural gymnastics that everyone can do independently, every day at home is very important. Yoga, pilates, use of appropriate pillows are also indicated. Finally, after a debate with the public (over 40 people), the traditional coffee offered by the organizers.
The next Caffè del Benessere will always take place in the hall of the New Oratory of the Parish of Cossila San Grato on Thursday, October 20, always from 15:00 to 17:00 and will have as its subject “Open questions for end-of-life care” ” with speakers dr .Carlo Peruselli, palliative physician.
