Trattoria Almondo and Caffè dell’Orologio-

from Luca Iaccarino

The first opened in the Gran Madre area. The other in via Morgari 16, in front of the Casa del Quartiere in San Salvario

I rarely use these lines to talk about new releases, but in the last few weeks I’ve come across not one but two new ones that I really liked and I want to share them because I think they can be of great comfort during this particular tiring and very hot summer (burning in the strict sense but also figuratively).

In the first, it was understood about ten days ago: it is called Trattoria Almondo ( and a new modern trattoria next to the Gran Madre. By contemporary trattoria I mean those places that are not free-flowing but modern, bright, friendly. Among the many places that today pretend to be trattorias, Almondo lo in the strict sense: it offers well-made regional Italian dishes at prices within reach of (almost) everyone, most of which are around 10/12 euros. The venue is elegant, slightly industrial, with a terrace overlooking the church, in a more than strategic location. With friends we taste a lot: from Liguria a nice thin cappon, simple and fresh as it should be (€11), from Tuscany pappa al pomodoro (9), delicious Umbrian brustenghi with raw Norcia and pecorino (9), from Genoa mandilli al pesto (12), from Sicily parmigiana (12), finally a tiramisu (5). The wines do not exceed 24 euros, and it seems to me the perfect place for a summer evening.

The second discovery takes place on Monday and love at first sight: Caff dell’Orologio, in front of Casa del Quartiere di San Salvario, in via Morgari 16 / A. I grew up here, but now even more beautiful: big bright rooms, full of good things and objects, the new management has made it a Piedmontese place to offer but a lot of hygge (the Danish term for welcoming ) in shape. It just opened, and last week it only offered dishes at aperitif: I sit at the counter, have a Biova beer, then a Martinotti method from Timorasso, then a gin and tonic (I know, I’m missing nothing ) and I accompanying them with green anchovies, vegetable rabato and a delicious chicken salad with walnuts: all packaged with the happy hand of Elisabetta Desana, already in Rossorubino.

The dishes are offered whole or in half portions, so at aperitif you can taste many good things (there is even a sandwich with salami!) at a low price; from tomorrow the lunch service will also start: Piedmont is always at the center, in wines, food and maximum relaxation. Almondo will close only the week after Ferragosto, the clock never: they will be of great comfort during this summer. We will need it.
